(1758-1831) Монро, ДжеймсПятый президент США (1817-25). Участник Войны за независимость [ Revolutionary War], ранен в битве под Трентоном [ Trenton, Battle of]. В 1782 был избран в законодательное собрание Вирджинии, в 1790 - в Сенат США. Активно участвовал в создании Демократической-Республиканской партии [ Democratic-Republican Party]. Находясь в составе дипломатической миссии во Франции в 1794, выступил с критикой договора Джея [ Jay's Treaty] и был отозван. В 1799-1802 - губернатор Вирджинии. В 1803 - посланник во Франции, участвовал в переговорах о покупке Луизианы [ Louisiana Purchase]. Государственный секретарь в 1811-17 в администрации Дж. Мэдисона [ Madison, James], а с 1814, после того, как англичане сожгли г. Вашингтон во время англо-американской войны 1812-1814 [ War of 1812], одновременно военный министр [ Secretary of War]. Первоначально был антифедералистом, на посту президента проявил себя как умеренный и осторожный политический деятель, а период его президентства известен как "эра доброго согласия" [ Era of Good Feelings].
